Freenas plex hardware acceleration

Download FreeNAS: download or torrents unofficial. FreeNAS Plex and hardware acceleration self. Hi All. I have hit a few problems throughout my little project. Chief of which is continually FreeBSD support for what I would have considered 'normal linux' things. Now I have hit something that is just making me reconsider the whole damn thing; Hardware acceleration for Plex.

Hell if I had set up plex on a raspberry pi, hardware acceleration for plex would have been enabled on the Pi! Am I wrong?

Is there some sort of HACK or instruction i need to execute to enable this functionality? I could really use a hint in the right direction. Right now, your GPU is vampire power - doing nothing but wasting electricity and padding your electric bill. Intel Quick Sync may be possible with some tweaks. While one can setup Plex via the plug-in, it's recommended to manually install.

There's several benefits to a manual installation vs the plug-in. But, you should question if you honestly need it. The only time I've seen a benefit has been 4k streaming to a 4k display. And this was for multiple streams.

It's just Plex almost always out of date running in a jail. Faced with the same issue I switched over to proxmox.

I really miss freenas as a gui for managing storage, but love how it runs vms and containers. If I did it again I'd get a second cheap proxmox box attached to freenas as storage. Nvidia GPU accelerated mpeg4 is not as good as software transcoding, but the storage benefits can be immense if you have a lot of Mpeg2 encoded DVD rips.

And of course, it is much, much faster to transcode. The hardest part for me was compiling ffmpeg with all the right libraries and drivers on debian which isn't officially supported by the SW, of course. I saved over a terabyte of storage by converting my tv show dvd rips to mpeg4. I can appreciate going through the trouble of getting hardware acceleration working because it sounds interesting and like a good learning experience.

However, I'd personally just add another drive to the pool if I needed the space on my Xeon powered server. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. This is likely due to limited HEVC features in that generation. Core 4th Gen Haswell added H. For p transcode, "Haswell or better" is reasonable guidance. TrueNAS Other Xeons do not have an iGPU. You will still have it available during initial boot, for switching boot environments or dropping into a debug session, but it will switch off once the iGPU drivers are loaded.

In the meantime, if you can manage to get Nvidia drivers installed on FreeBSD, then you can always try it. There's nothing in Emby preventing it from working on FreeBSD, we just don't know yet if it actually will.

But whenever I try to enable it in emby, the ui just spins forever because it's not getting results from something. Could also be my hardware though as my newest running freebsd is a 4th gen i5 and I just started playing with that stuff again after migrating my desktop last week.

4 Best Open Source NAS Software for DIY server in 2020

Ok thanks for explaining! I am by far not an expert on this but I think ffmpeg just needs to support nvenc in order to support the hardware part, and I am quite sure that the newer versions will have that. Why don't you just give it a try? I'd do it but I don't have any hard for it. And the nvidia driver in freebsd are quite established.

The other options don't seem to trigger it. You have to use intel quicksync for that via the drm kmod. No, the server will create the transcoding temp folder if it doesn't already exist. Best thing to do is attach the server log and then we don't have to guess anymore.

It's really hard to say. I don't see much evidence there of a problem relating to the temporary transcoding path. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. Plex is likewise hardcoded to use renderD, so no way to use card0 if your server is headless like mine. Well, Plex does what I want, it finds and uses renderD, the driver loads and it kinda looks like its doing the right thing judging by the logs. But it always crashes Plex in the end. After serverals testing using 2 machines with FreeBSD FreeBSD I think this is assigned port address automatically from OS for devices on startup. When we load ikms earlier or later will be affected to this port address.

When using minimal setup only using 2 HDDs and few numbers of partitions, that address will be got low number. I tried to load ikms earlier on loader. The trick is load drm.

Address will reserved when drm. Xigmanas 12 will blacklisted module for drm and ikms. So, I have to manually unset parameter when every boot. I got message GPU hang and resetted when debbug on drm.

Made sure plex is in the video group and it seems to be working,: image. Thanks for keeping us updated.

The new kernel driver did the work. Running vainfo against the renderD node works fine AND I can now transcode the video inside the jail. Glad its all working. Could you please be a bit more specific about overriding modules in FreeNAS Sorry for unclear explanations.

For Freenas It will overwrite some files.

Maybe you can backup first the original freenas files. Then for that self-made DIY NAS server you definitely need some OS or software to work; obviously, because the operating system is the thing that will control the functions that your NAS server will provide later. However, still, there are only a few well known Linux operating systems that dedicatedly meant to do this job. The choice of an operating system depends heavily on what you are going to do with the NAS server.

In this guide, we focus on software that understands a NAS server primarily as a system for the provision of data in your office or home. With the operating systems we mention in this article, you can copy data back and forth, perform backups, along with some advanced tasks such as establishing a VPN connection or installing a mail server including plugins to extend OS capabilities. Here we are about to list some best NAS solutions to help you if you are planning to data management using open-source software in You might be already familiar with its name.

It is one of the best FreeBSD based NAS software solutions that not only provide easy to use interface but also plugins to extend features such as for the Plex server. The operating system is designed to enable a self-built NAS system based on free software.

The company behind it actually deals in NAS hardware for enterprises, however, the OS is available free of cost for the general public. In addition, the operation of the FreeNAS is extremely simple. It uses the OpenZFS file system which is highly reliable and can be configured from the admin web interface volume manager. It is based on Debian Linux distribution, yes, the familiar one thus easy to install and manage without much system knowledge.

If you want to create your own DIY NAS box, it provides easy-to-manage file server to provide data storage and smaller server tasks such as media services with little effort. XigmaNAS has extensive documentation directly on its own website, thus installation and handling would not be a big pain. Conversion of NAS server into a media server is also possible using the Plex media server extension that allows to manage media data in a visually appealing manner and to stream it to other devices.

Or you can install an interface that also makes access from smartphones in a more convenient way. Get XigmaNAS. Btrfs is a so-called CoW Copy-On-Write file system and developed by the Oracle to provide high read and write performance and to handle fault tolerance, repair and easy administration. It only supports bit modern systems with at least 2Gb RAM and for best out of it, 4 to 8Gb is recommended depending on the number of data hard drives used.

My Plex version is 1. I do have a Plex Pass subscription. However, I dont seem to have the option for hardware decoding.

Maybe if you were to build your own or use FreeBSD. I have a thought about running a linux vm on freebsd and moving plex into it. My thought is that these kaby lake chips support the virtualization bit on the cpu and also the quick sync is a cpu feature. Even though I will probably have some overhead with the VM, a VM should have all the features of the cpu so the transcoding should be done in hardware, so it should be faster in reality?

Just thinking out loud. Dec 20, I expected the Intel Quick Sync to be a feature of the cpu, but the more I look at it, it actually seems to be treated as a gpu. Like a little gpu just built into the cpu. Because of this the virtualization just adds to many layers to work correctly.

I think this is the end of the rabbit hole for now. I think if this were to happen, you could force an X server to start with the intel driver, then the vaapi call in Plex would have something to call in to.What's new New posts New resources Latest activity. Right now I do not have a compatible GPU, but I will soon begin looking into an upgrade so that I can make use of hardware acceleration. I hope someone can figure this out and write some sort of guide maybe, I am not capable of doing this alone!
